Announcing: The new NewsCord app is live. Download it now and see the news for what it really is.

You might know NewsCord from Instagram, where they've been bringing full, unfiltered news to tens of thousands of people. But not long ago they also released an app. And it’s worth checking out!

The app shows you the news on topics you care about, using something they call Cross-Source Fact Aggregation. That means it pulls together facts and angles from dozens of global sources, so you see a fuller and more accurate picture. For every story, you get three things:

  1. the complete context
  2. a breakdown of where each part of the story comes from (local, Western mainstream, tabloid, Israeli, alternative, and more)
  3. a side-by-side look at how different sources frame the same event - including when those narratives clash.

On top of that there are other features like Smart Sharing. This feature generates images with the most important facts or coverage comparisons, so you can easily share them with your network.

A conversation with Nima, the founder of NewsCord

We’ve known NewsCord for a while now. It’s been over a year since the project began, so we took this moment to catch up with Nima and ask him a few questions about why he started NewsCord and what’s happened since then.

Why did you create NewsCord?

"NewsCord started in November 2023, about a month into Israel's genocide in Gaza. What pushed me over the edge was the way the media was shaping the story. It wasn’t just what they said. It was what they left out. Headlines, framing, silence around key facts, all of it worked together to blur the truth and protect those in power."

What was broken about how media outlets were bringing news?

"For decades, media outlets have either ignored or twisted the reality of life under Israeli occupation. You’d see headlines like 'Clashes leave 16 Palestinians dead,' which completely removes the attacker from the story. After October 7, it got even worse. Newsrooms repeated government talking points, shared inflated or false claims, and used vague language to justify war crimes. People weren’t seeing the full picture, they were being steered."

What were the first milestones after launching NewsCord?

"In January 2024, we launched the website and joined the Tech For Palestine ecosystem. That really helped us connect with other impact-focused projects. Then our Instagram took off. We reached tens of millions and grew to over 51,000 followers, people hungry for honest reporting."

Did NewsCord have any real-world impact?

"Yes. Together with Accountable Media, we ran campaigns that led to over 30,000 public complaints to major news outlets. Some of these forced responses from them and were even reflected in the public dashboards of Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator."

And what about the app?

"The app officially launched in January 2025. It now has more than 5,000 downloads. Every day, hundreds of people use it to get the news with more clarity and context than they’ll find anywhere else."

What issues do you still see in mainstream coverage?

"Even now, with estimates of over 200,000 civilians killed in Gaza, media coverage often repeats Israeli military statements without critique. They leave out the attacker in stories about massacres. Even when Israel killed 15 medics in Rafah, the reporting had no accountability. Editorials talk about justice, but they don’t follow up with action. It’s empty branding."

So it sounds like we need NewsCord more than ever

"Yes, because the media is still one of Israel’s strongest weapons. We built NewsCord to push back. To break through the spin. To hold power to account. And we’re just getting started."
