Announcing: Tech for Palestine Is Now a Member-Driven Organization
As of November 2, anyone can become a member of Tech for Palestine and build advocacy projects under the Tech for Palestine (T4P) banner. This gives people who want to use their skills for Palestine a team to work with and the backing of the organization behind Boycat, NewsCord, Find a Protest, and JayWalk.
From Incubator to Member-Driven Organization
For the past three years, the T4P incubator supported the people behind 90+ new initiatives in turning their ideas into advocacy tools. Those teams received our mentorship, connections, and support, while the building itself happened in their own organizations outside of Tech for Palestine.
Over time, we realized we were ready to do more. More projects with more people. For that reason we decided to bring the ‘building’ inside. The mentorship we used to offer external teams is now available to every member, which means projects carry the T4P name and our members build them together.
How Membership Works
Members join with the skills they have, whether that is engineering, design, research, writing or organizing. Some join an existing project that needs their expertise, while others bring an idea of their own and start a new team, which our mentors helps scope, staff with fellow members and take to a first public version.
Here is a recent example of how quickly this can work: When Macklemore was dropped from Ed Sheeran’s US tour after saying “Free Palestine” on stage, he explained that Sheeran couldn’t get past his public stance of “I don’t take sides”. Our members picked up the moment and built Ed Takes No Sides, a directory where artists who do take a stand for Palestine can create a profile and be found.
What 200 Members Built in Our Private Beta
Before announcing membership publicly, we tested it for several months in a beta with 200 members. In that time, members built more than 25 new advocacy projects, including:
- Israel Bonds Tracker, a platform that raises awareness about Israeli bonds.
- Sponsored internships for Palestinian students, connecting students from Gaza with internships in the UK and Ireland.
- Profile Pic Maker, brought back to life by members: a tool that adds a Palestinian-flag frame to social media profile pictures.
- A team that researches bias against Palestinians in frontier LLMs
