This fresh campaign is the reason Tech for Palestine exists — to bring together a community who takes action, inspiring more people to speak out and show up in support of Palestine.

When the onslaught of distressing scenes from Gaza led many to look away, Tech for Palestine community members HS, Licks3000, and two other designers set out to create an aesthetic alternative in social media advocacy. Together, they crafted a collection of Instagram filters featuring symbols of Palestinian pride and resistance and affirming global calls for a ceasefire.

HS, who joined the Tech for Palestine community in its first week, notes that the filters are designed with subtlety in mind. “Many of my followers don’t want to look at traumatic images, but they’ll still stop and look at a picture of my child or my pet. The filters are a way to participate in advocacy without reposting graphic content.”

Inspired by their child's simple idea to spread awareness on Instagram, HS turned to the Tech for Palestine community to convert their vision to action. There, they recruited co-designers and created a team that spanned the globe.

Designs include popular symbols of Palestinian solidarity: the watermelon, traditional Keffiyeh motif, olive branches and red poppies. They also feature designs to galvanize specific communities– teachers, doctors and journalists for Palestine– whose counterparts in Gaza have inspired masses with their courage in the face of Israel’s indiscriminate attacks.

This fresh campaign is the reason Tech for Palestine exists — to bring together a community who takes action, inspiring more people to speak out and show up in support of Palestine.
